Vera has been chasing a fight with Cruz for over a year now. At first, Dom was reluctant to take a fight against a lower-ranked opponent. But with Vera shooting up the rankings after his last win, Cruz has agreed to meet Vera at the main event of the UFC’s August 13th event.
Dominick Cruz Outstrikes Pedro Munhoz
— MMAFighting.com (@MMAFighting) December 12, 2021
Cruz has not fought since outstriking Pedro Munhoz at UFC 269 in December 2021. After the win, Cruz said he was offered a quick turnaround fight but turned it down due to injury. UFC matchmakers then shelved him for six months rather than offer him another fight. The Dominator has won back-to-back fights since losing two bantamweight title fights against Cody Garbrandt and Henry Cejudo.
The 36-year-old Cruz is a former WEC bantamweight champion and the UFC’s inaugural bantamweight champion. After two successful title defenses in 2011, Cruz was sidelined by injuries in 2012 and was stripped of the title in 2014. Two years later, Cruz regained the UFC bantamweight title in 2016 by defeating T.J. Dillashaw in 2016. Overall, Cruz has a record of 24-3 with seven knockouts and one submission victory.
After being used to having the minus money sign next to his name for the most part of his career, Cruz has been the betting underdog in four out of his last six bouts, including his last two. The Dominator was the +130 betting underdog when he beat Casey Kenney at UFC 259 and was the +105 bottom dog when he beat Munhoz the last time out.
Marlon Vera Bests Rob Font in Bloody FOTY Candidate
— FanSided MMA (@FanSidedMMA) May 1, 2022
Vera is coming off a bloody Fight of the Year candidate at the main event of UFC Vegas 53 last April 30 in Las Vegas. The win was Chito’s third in a row since losing to Jose Aldo in December 2020. After that defeat, the Ecuadorian mixed martial artist earned two post-fight bonuses in 2021 with wins over Davey Grant and Frankie Edgar.
The 29-year-old began his career at Panama Fight League, Samurai FC, and Inka FC before appearing in The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America where he reached the semifinals before an injury forced him out of the tournament. After starting his UFC career with a 4-4 record, Vera has won nine out of his last 11 bouts with his losses coming at the hands of Aldo and Song Yadong. Chito has a record of 19-7 with seven knockouts and 8 submission wins.
This marks only the third time in his last seven bouts where Vera has opened with the minus money sign next to his name. He hit the betting boards at +250 against Grant and was the -190 betting favorite when he fought Edgar. In his most recent appearance, Vera opened at +150 and closed at +1115 against Font.
