Queen of Terre Haute to Break Ground on June 21st.

Groundbreaking Queen Of Terre Haute Casino

  • The groundbreaking for the Queen of Terre Haute Casino will be on June 21, 2022.
  • The event will take place at the casino’s 50-acre location near I-70 and State Road 46.
  • Churchill Downs’ $260 million project will have 1,000 slot machines and 50 table games.

The Queen of Terre Haute Casino will have its groundbreaking on June 21, 2022.

According to Vigo County commissioner Chris Switzer last Friday, the ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on June 21st:

“We’ve been trying to set something up for a month or two. We thought we’d have to move it to July, but then we arrived at the June 21 date….”It’ll be a great day. People from all over western Indiana should be there.”

The Vigo casino license was awarded by the Indiana Gaming Commission to Churchill Downs Inc. last November 17, 2021.

Rezoning Approved Last March

Churchill Downs initially planned to put up the casino west of Haute City Center Mall off of U.S. 41, near the city’s wastewater treatment plant. However, CDI announced last March plans to move the project to the east side of the city and subsequently filed for a rezoning of the current 50-acre location near I-70 and State Road 46.

The rezoning was approved by authorities last March and the Terre Haute Board of Zoning Appeals also approved a 25-foot zoning variance to allow Churchill Downs to build a 150-foot hotel tower near the airport as it was out of flight zones.

$260 Million Casino

The Queen of Terre Haute will feature a 400,000 square foot casino building with 56,000 square feet in gaming space. It will have 1,000 slot machines and 50 table games. The property will also have a 10-story 125-room hotel, a sportsbook, restaurants and bars, and a rooftop pool.

CDI will invest $260 million to build the casino resort and its construction will create 1,000 jobs. Upon completion, the casino will hire 350 permanent employees and 146 part-time workers. It will also carry a $20.6 million payroll and is expected to generate $190 million in annual economic impact.
