Max Verstappen Back as Betting Favorite to win Drivers Championship

F1 Championship Trophy Racing Background

  • Max Verstappen is back as the odds-on-favorite to win the 2022 F-1 Drivers Championship
  • Verstappen is listed at -120 after winning back to back races in Imola and Miami.
  • The Red Bull superstar is also the +110 favorite to win th Spanish GP in Catalunya.

After a slow start which saw him finish 19th in the opening race of the season and retire in the third race of the campaign in Melbourne, Formula One world champion Max Verstappen is back in business.

With Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc taking over his spot as betting favorite to win the 2022 Drivers’ Title, Verstappen has won back-to-back races to reclaim the title of betting favorite.

As of the latest betting odds at Bovada, the Red Bull star is back as the -120 betting favorite to win a second straight F-1 world title. Meanwhile, Leclerc has dropped to second with his +110 odds while seven-time winner Lewis Hamilton is a far third at +2800 at online sportsbook BetOnline.

Verstappen Wins the First-Ever Miami GP

Verstappen won the first-ever Miami GP last weekend in front of a star-studded crowd that included Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, David Beckham, and Serena Williams. Starting third, the defending F-1 world champion overtook Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz at turn one, then passed rival Charles Leclerc on lap nine, and held off a late charge by Leclerc to cut his rival’s lead in the Drivers Standings to 19 points.

The victory was the second consecutive win for Verstappen who upset Leclerc at Imola one week earlier. The Ferrari ace was the +110 betting favorite heading to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix with Verstappen listed as the second favorite at +175. Leclerc and Ferrari looked unstoppable after a Grand Slam at the Australian Grand Prix and the Monegasque driver took over as the odds on favorite to win the 2022 World title by establishing a big lead in the early Drivers Standings.

But Verstappen rebounded with his own Grand Slam at Imola, the second of his F1 career to keep close to Leclerc and the early leaders. That dominant performance made Verstappen the odds-on-favorite to win the Miami GP at even money odds with Leclerc a close second at +120. Leclerc looked like he would return the favor to Max by winning pole position but it was Verstappen who came out on top on race day.

Max Favored to Win Spanish Grand Prix

Not only is Verstappen back as the odds-on-favorite to win the Drivers Title, but the Belgian-Dutch driver is also the betting favorite to win this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix at +110 with Leclerc on his tail at +120 and Carlos Sainz at +1200. Verstappen drove the fastest lap here last year and finished second behind race winner Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen won the Spanish GP in 2016 and has finished on the podium in four out of the previous five installments of the race. The only time Verstappen didn’t get 2nd or 3rd place was when he retired from the race in 2017 due to accident damage. The Red Bull ace has finished second in the last two editions of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is still the most decorated driver at Catalunya with six wins and 10 Top 5 finishes. But given his current struggles with the Mercedes car, he is just a long shot +2500 to win the Spanish GP. Leclerc meanwhile has three Top 10 finishes including two Top 5s in four appearances in Catalunya but has never stood at the podium in any of his appearances there.
