NBA Finals 2022 MVP Tatum

  • Steph Curry is still the odds on favorite to win the 2022 NBA Finals MVP award at +225 odds.
  • However, it is second favorite Jayson Tatum at +275 odds who is the most popular bet to win the award.
  • Jordan Poole, listed at +2500 odds, is the third most popular bet behind Tatum and Curry.

Steph Curry is still the odds on favorite to win the 2022 NBA Finals MVP award but Boston Celtics’ superstar Jayson Tatum is the most popular bet to win the award.

According to the online sportsbook BetMGM, Tatum at +275 odds has 9% of the total betting tickets and 15% of the total betting handle to be the MVP of the 2022 NBA Finals. Curry at +225 isn’t far behind with 8% of the betting slips and 14% of the total money wagered in the said betting market.

Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler has the third-shortest odds to win the award at +600 while Dallas Mavericks sensation Luka Doncic is next at +700. Klay Thompson and Draymond Green are next at +1800 while Jaylen Brown is listed at +2000. Jordan Poole is currently at +2500 and Poole is the third most popular bet with 4% of the tickets and 4% of the handle.

The One Accolade That Has Eluded Steph Curry

Curry has won two NBA MVP awards and an All-Star Game MVP trophy aside from three NBA titles. However, one award that has eluded the sweet-shooting guard is the NBA Finals MVP award. Golden State went to the NBA Finals in five consecutive seasons from 2015 to 2019 and won thrice. But the Finals MVP awards went to Andre Iguodala in 2015 and Kevin Durant in 2017 and 2017 during the Dubs’ championship seasons.

With Durant now in Brooklyn, Curry is back as the Warriors’ top scoring option. During the Memphis series, Curry averaged 26/6/5 despite having poor shooting games. But now that Golden State is back in the Conference Finals and are sizable favorites to beat the Dallas Mavericks, Curry is undeniably the odds-on-favorite to be named Finals MVP.

But that’s not where Steph started. It was Devin Booker who opened as the +500 favorite at the best NBA sportsbooks to win Finals MVP honors followed by Giannis Antetokounmpo at +700 and Chris Paul at +800. However, with both the top-seeded Phoenix Suns and 2021 NBA champions Milwaukee Bucks already eliminated, Curry has gone from a +1400 opening odds to the current +225 odds on favorite to win Finals MVP honors.

The Beginning of a Superstar

Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum has emerged as a true superstar in the 2022 playoffs. Tatum ousted Kevin Durant in the opening round of the playoffs and then proceeded to eliminate Giannis Antetokounmpo in one of the best playoff series we’ve seen in recent years.

Tatum is currently averaging 28.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game in the playoffs and is on pace to become the first Celtics player to average 26/5/5 in a single postseason. After going down 2-1 in their series against the Bucks, Tatum turned from a star to a supernova, averaging 33.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game on 47.5% FG shooting.

The Celtics came back from a 3-2 deficit to win Game 6 in Milwaukee and then proceeded to blow out the Bucks in Game 7 at their home court. Tatum scored 46 in the all-important Game 6 and then watched Grant Williams deliver the big baskets in the second half of Game 7 after keeping the Celtics afloat in the first half when Giannis was trying to take over the game.
