Luka Doncic With Mavericks City Background

  • The Dallas Mavericks blew out the Phoenix Suns 123-90 in Game 7 of their best-of-seven second round playoff series on Sunday at the Footprint Center.
  • Dallas entered the game as +6.5 point spread and +260 underdogs at online sportsbook BetOnline.
  • The Suns were the best regular season team in the NBA with 64 wins and the top seed in the 2022 NBA Playoffs.

The Dallas Mavericks entered Game 7 of their second-round playoff series against the Phoenix Suns as heavy favorites. Not only were the Mavs facing the team with the best regular-season record in the league, but they were also playing them at home. The early betting results also favored the Suns to win Sunday’s game.

According to BetMGM, 62% of the tickets and 67% of the betting handle were on the Suns to cover the -6.5 point betting spread. At the BetOnline App, 52% of the spread bets were on the Suns at -6.5 and 77% of the Moneyline bets were on Phoenix at -280 odds.

They underestimated the Luka Special.

The Luka Special

Luka Doncic exploded for 27 points in the first half to lead the Mavs to a 57-27 halftime lead that took the fight out of the Suns. Dallas’ 30-point halftime lead was the biggest in a Game 7. The Mavs went on to beat the Suns 123-90 and advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since their championship season in 2011.

Doncic’s 27 first-half points were the second-most in NBA history in the first half of a Game 7, trailing only the 29 that well, Doncic himself scored on 6/6/2021 when the Mavs played the L.A. Clippers in the opening round of the 2021 Playoffs. Dallas lost that Game 7 to the Clippers but there was no stopping Doncic nor the Mavs on Sunday night.

Luka finished with 35 points on 12-19 shooting, including 6-11 from behind the three-point arc. He also grabbed 10 rebounds, issued 4 assists, and had two steals to lead Dallas. Spencer Dinwiddie also came up big with 30 points, the second-most points ever for a player off the bench in a Game 7. Doncic and Dinwiddie also became the first teammates to score at least 30 points each in a Game 7 since Kobe and Shaq in 2002.

Worst Game of Chris Paul’s Career

While Doncic shone for Dallas, Chris Paul played the worst game of his career on Sunday. CP3 finished with 10 points, 4 assists, and 1 rebound in 31 minutes of action. Paul’s plus/minus in Game 7 was -39, the worst in his career, regular season or playoffs. CP3 was off to a sensational start in the 2022 Playoffs but in the last five since turning 37 years old last May 6th, Paul has made only 17 baskets and 27 assists while committing 22 turnovers and 22 fouls. But Paul wasn’t the only one to blame. More than Father Time proving to be unbeaten again, the Kardashian Curse struck anew.

Devin Booker also had a disappearing act in one of the biggest games of his playoff career. D-Book scored only 11 points on 3-14 shooting while missing all of his four three-point attempts. He did have three bounds, two assists, and one steal but also committed four turnovers and was a worse -41 in plus-minus. That’s one game after shooting 6-17 from the field and 0-4 from deep in a 19-point performance in a losing effort in Game 6.

It’s the second consecutive season that the Suns have been eliminated after taking a 2-0 series lead. It can be recalled that the Suns were two games away from winning the 2021 NBA championship when they lost the next four games of the 2021 NBA Finals to the Milwaukee Bucks. They managed to send their 2022 West semifinals series against the Mavs to a Game 7 but none of their stars showed up to play.
