Week 1 hasn’t been kind to the Indianapolis Colts in the last 8 seasons. Indianapolis has not won a season opener since 2013 and has the third-longest opening week losing streak in NFL history at 8 games. Only the Cleveland Browns, who lost 13 straight Week 1 games from 2005-17, and the Philadelphia Eagles, who dropped 9 season openers in a row from 1968 -76, have been worse.
This season, however, the Colts have a good chance of ending that dubious streak as they face a Texans team that is still in the early stages of a massive rebuilding project. Last season, the Colts went 2-0 SU in their season series against the Texans and won via an aggregate score of 62-3, including a 31-0 shutout at NRG Stadium. Houston however, is 2-0 against Indianapolis when playing in Week 1, doing so in back-to-back seasons in 2010 and 2011.
The Colts will have a new quarterback under center this season in the person of 15-year veteran Matt Ryan whom they traded for from the Atlanta Falcons. Indianapolis will also parade defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and cornerback Stephon Gilmore so it’s easy to easy why they are sizable favorites against a team with Davis Mills as starting quarterback.
