  • Romero and Polizzi are set to co-headline Bellator 280 on May 6th at the Accor Arena in Paris, France.

Yoel Romero has opened as a sizable betting favorite against Alex Polizzi in their short-notice bout at Bellator 280.

Romero opened at -270 odds, the shortest opening odds ever in his career when the top MMA sportsbooks released the first betting lines for the fight last Monday::

Romero was supposed to fight Melvin Manhoef in the co-main event of Bellator 280 at Accor Arena in Paris, France. However, Manhoef withdrew from the event last week with lingering injuries suffered after he fought off three burglars at his house last March.

Romero Drops Bellator Debut

Romero heads to this bout looking for his first victory in four years. “The Soldier of God” lost his final three UFC bouts against Robert Whitaker, Paulo Costa, and Israel Adesanya. Then this past September, Romero dropped his Bellator debut by losing on points to Phil Davis at Bellator 266.

A former silver medalist in Olympic wrestling at the Sydney games, Romero is widely regarded as one of the most athletic fighters in the history of MMA and one of the most dangerous because of his power and explosiveness. However, Romero is already 45-years old and has won only once in his last six bouts, though all of the fights have been against elite competition. Overall, the Cuban has a record of 13-6 with 11 knockouts.

This marks only the second time in his last 12 bouts where Romero is listed as the betting favorite. The only other time when the Solider of God had the minus money sign written next to his name was when he fought Paulo Costa at -160 odds. Romero lost that bout via unanimous decision.

Polizzi Submits Augusto

On the other hand, Polizzi has won his last three bouts to rise to 7th in the latest Bellator MMA light heavyweight rankings. The 30-year-old from Madison, Wisconsin survived a vicious flying knee to record a submission win over Jose Augusto Azevedo Barros in his most recent bout at Bellator 276 just last March 12th.

Polizzi is a veteran who has fought under promotions like Pure FC, Chosen Few Fighting Championships, Final Fight Championship, and LFA before joining Bellator in 2020. He defeated Rafael Carvalho via unanimous decision during his promotional debut at Bellator 245 on September 11, 2020, but dropped his next assignment against Julius Anglickas. Polizzi has a record of 10-1 with four knockouts and four submission victories.

“Eazy” will be the betting underdog for the third time in six Bellator MMA bouts. He closed at +140 odds against Carvalho and was also the +165 bottom dog when he fought Grant Neal at Bellator 266. Polizzi won both fights via decision. Polizzi was the -160 betting favorite in his last bout against Augusto.
