- Online sportsbook BetOnline says that Steve Nash is a -300 favorite to return as Nets head coach next season.
- The Nets were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics after entering the season as preseason title favorites.
- According to NBA writer Marc Stein Nash still has the backing of Kevin Durant and owner Joe Tsai.
The Brooklyn Nets became the first preseason title favorites not to win a single playoff game during that season.
Brooklyn opened as the preseason title favorites but ended up getting swept by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs. Because of that, there are rumors that management may be breaking up the band and those rumors include head coach Steve Nash who now has betting odds on his future as the Nets head coach:

Underwhelming Nets Got Swept by Boston
— Anthony DeRosa (@Anthony) April 26, 2022
The Nets opened as preseason favorites to win the 2022 NBA championship. But the season did not go as planned. Kyrie Irving was not allowed to play in Brooklyn’s home games at the start of the season because of the state of New York’s vaccine mandates.
Because of that, the Nets finished with a sub-.500 home record of 20-21 and an overall mark of 44-38. The underwhelming season forced them to earn their playoff spot via the play-in tournament. Although they still finished as the 7th seed in the East, the Nets were in for a tough task against the Boston Celtics.
Brooklyn opened as the underdog against Boston but they were the underdogs with the shortest odds in the first round of the playoffs with their series against the Celtics favored to go the seven-game distance. That did not happen as the Celtics simply ran over the Nets in the playoffs, eliminating the Nets who failed to win a single game in the series.

Brooklyn’s early ouster in the playoffs and their failure to win the title in the last two seasons have left some experts doubting if they will run it back with the same cast next season. Kyrie Irving has been linked to other teams and the best NBA sportsbooks even have the betting odds on them. Now, it’s head coach Steve Nash whom the betting sites are making betting lines for. But despite having a 25% implied probability of being fired, respected NBA writer Marc Stein says Nash isn’t going anywhere.
According to Stein, Nash still has the support of superstar Kevin Durant and team governor Joe Tsai. Nash and Tsai are known to be good friends and even invested together in a National Lacrosse League franchise. Durant meanwhile told reporters after their playoff exit that Nash deserves to return next season. Nash worked as a part-time head coach with the Warriors when KD played in Golden State. Aside from his connection with Tsai and Durant, Nash is also a former teammate of GM Sean Marks so you have to be confident that Nash is staying next season.
Other than his connections, you have to give Nash credit for steering Brooklyn to the playoffs despite the odds and challenges that they faced. Aside from the Kyrie home games saga, they also traded James Harden mid-season and never got his replacement ( Ben Simmons ) to play a single game. If Kyrie returns next season, and Simmons does end up playing, the Nets may finally show what they are made of.
