Aidan Hutchinson Opens Up as Favorite to Win DROY
— Pride of Detroit (@PrideOfDetroit) April 30, 2022
No. 2 overall pick Aidan Hutchinson from the University of Michigan has opened as the +350 odds-on-favorite to win the 2023 Defensive Rookie of the Year award. The 21-year-old Defensive End may not have the ceiling of the other players listed on the DROY betting boards but there is no doubt that he is ready to go from Day 1 and should lead the Detroit Lions in sacks next season.
Hutchinson set the Michigan single-season sacks record with 14 as a senior while winning several awards such as the Ted Hendricks Award, Lombardi Award, Lott IMPACT Trophy, and the Chicago Tribune Silver Football. Hutchinson was also the runner-up in the Heisman Trophy voting and was the only player named as a finalist for the nation’s top individual honors.
The 21-year-old from Plymouth, Michigan is considered the most NFL-ready defensive player in his class. If Hutchinson does win the 2023 Defensive Rookie of the Year award, he will be the 4th player from the Lions to do so after Lem Barney (1968 ) Al “Bubba” Baker (1976), and Ndamukong Suh (2010).
Kayvon Thibodeaux Has Second-Best Odds to Win DROY
— Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) May 2, 2022
Meanwhile, 5th overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux from the Oregon Ducks and drafted by the New York Giants has the second shortest odds to win the 2023 DROY award at +400. Thibodeaux. The 21-year-old was the 2020 Morris Award winner and was named a unanimous First-Team All-American last season. Although many experts consider Thibodeaux as a raw talent, he will benefit from playing in the NFC East.
On the other hand, Jacksonville Jaguars’ top overall pick Travon Walker from the Georgia Bulldogs is third on the opening odds boards at +500 odds. Walker has otherworldly athleticism but like Thibodeaux, he may need more time to develop. However, Walker steps in as the Jaguars’ second-best pass rusher, and his versatility will make him a contender for the award.
26th pick Jermaine Johnson II of the New York Jets, 27th pick Devin Lloyd of Jacksonville are both listed at +900 and Green Bay Packers’ 22nd pick Quay Walker are all priced at +900 to complete the players with odds shorter than +1000. Lloyd and Travon Walker are the only teammates on top of the early DROY betting boards.
